THE BEGINNING

How It All Started

In 2010, a small Seoul entertainment company called Big Hit Entertainment began assembling a hip-hop group. The company's CEO, Bang Si-hyuk, had a vision: a group that would speak honestly about the struggles of Korean youth, tackling themes like academic pressure, social inequality, and the search for identity.

Kim Namjoon (RM) was the first recruit, already an established underground rapper in Seoul's hip-hop scene. Over the next two years, six more members joined: Kim Seokjin, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jungkook. The youngest, Jungkook, was only 13 years old when he joined β€” turning down offers from seven other agencies because he was impressed by RM.

On June 13, 2013, BTS debuted on M! Countdown with "No More Dream" β€” a defiant track challenging the Korean education system's obsession with conformity. Critics were skeptical. The industry dismissed them. But a small, passionate fanbase β€” soon to be named ARMY β€” saw something different.

What followed was one of the most remarkable underdog stories in music history. Through relentless touring, authentic social media engagement, and music that spoke directly to the anxieties of young people worldwide, BTS grew from a niche K-pop act to a genuine global phenomenon β€” the first Korean group to address the United Nations, the first to top the Billboard Hot 100, and the best-selling music act in South Korean history.

The secret? They never stopped being themselves. Every album, every speech, every tear shed on stage was real. And ARMY felt every single one.
